Hypnosis, when used as a therapeutic/ counseling tool (unlike stage hypnosis used for entertainment), is simply put, a state of deep but aware relaxation. The body and the conscious is relaxed but the subconscious remains alert and receptive. This beautiful state of aware relaxation is induced by the Hypnocounselor who uses a message overload to confuse and eventually bypass the critical mind to access the subconscious level of the mind.
A habit, behavior, thought- pattern, a limitation etc. is created and controlled by a person's subconscious, which is more than 5x bigger and stronger than the conscious. That is why working directly with the bigger part of the mind to create positive change helps tremendously and has a higher success rate than only working with the conscious part.
Hypnosis, used for avocational and vocational self-improvement, is proven to be effective and safe. A client enters that deep state of aware relaxation only for the purpose of hypnosis, after being counted out be the end of the session, the client's conscious and critical mind function regularly.
A positive change can only be achieved when the client really wants to make that change. Hypnosis is not a magic pill, nothing can be forced and the client is always in complete control. The Hypnocounselor can't and won't make a client do things that he or she doesn't want to.
